Molybdenum market update on August 12, 2025
The domestic molybdenum market is showing an overall trend of stabilization and recovery. With strong supplier reluctance to sell and firm pricing attitudes, coupled with a slight increase in downstream user inquiry and procurement enthusiasm, mainstream molybdenum product prices have risen to varying degrees, with molybdenum concentrate and ferromolybdenum prices increasing by approximately 30 yuan per ton-unit and 2,000 yuan per ton, respectively.
From the supply side, firstly, many molybdenum mining enterprises face significant production challenges, primarily due to unrelenting environmental crackdowns, frequent high-temperature rainfall, declining ore grades, and high energy prices, leading to persistently tight market spot circulation. Secondly, with the domestic economic environment steadily improving, market demand for molybdenum remains decent, resulting in faster inventory turnover for some suppliers, providing certain support for molybdenum prices. From January to July this year, the total steel procurement of ferromolybdenum was approximately 88,000 tons, an increase of about 8,800 tons compared to the same period last year, a rise of 11.11%.
From the demand side, the initiative of downstream users to engage in the market has slightly improved. Recently, steel companies such as Zhongtian Steel, Hengyang Valin Steel Tube, Changshu Longteng Special Steel, Tsingshan Holding Group, and Jiangsu Changqiang Steel have initiated tenders for ferromolybdenum. However, influenced by currently high molybdenum prices and limited market liquidity, some downstream enterprises have temporarily halted procurement.
In terms of news, price monitoring data from the Jiangxi Steel Market and Fuzhou Trade Plaza Steel Market show that in July, sales prices of the 44 monitored steel varieties included 24 increases, 17 decreases, and 3 unchanged. The average sales prices of wire rod (6.5mm HPB300 and 8mm HPB300) were 3,550.00 yuan per ton and 3,438.00 yuan per ton, respectively, with slight increases of 2.38% and 2.63% month-on-month, but decreases of 5.69% and 7.36% year-on-year, respectively. The average sales price of rebar (φ12mm HRB400E) was 3,314.00 yuan per ton, with a slight increase of 2.13% month-on-month, but a decrease of 3.63% year-on-year.
